CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEW – Why God? by Dan Dewitt

This is a good book for kids with silly looking pictures and good answers to the question, “Why do we believe in God?” It talks about creation and the fall of man and uses clues as to why we believe in God and know good and bad. It explains very well from a child’s point of view without going too deeply into things going wrong in this world. It uses two fun child characters who ask the question and the answers their mom gives, going into some of the wonders of the world. It is written by an apologetics professor who makes it understandable for children.

This book is recommended for children ages 4-8. It is a cute book and I plan to save it until my grandchildren are a little older and then plan to read it to them.

BOOK REVIEW – God Gave Me Grandma by Pamela Kennedy

This beautifully illustrated, padded board book is a cute book about why God Gave Grandmas. Each page ends with “I’m glad God gave me Grandma” or “That’s why God gave me Grandma.” Being a grandma myself, I enjoyed reading through this book and look forward to sharing it with my grandchildren. It identifies activities Grandmas do with their grandchildren and stresses how she shows them God’s love and teaches them about God. It touches on the special bond between grandmas and their grandchildren.

I feel like being a grandmother is a special call from God on our lives to reach out to our grandchildren and this book shows how grandmas can help and share Christ with their grandchildren.

BOOK REVIEW – What Am I Feeling? By Dr. Josh and Christi Straub

This is a great book for kids on identifying their feelings and realizing that their feelings don’t need to control them. It includes a pull-out feelings chart. Sam has butterflies in his stomach and is afraid to go to school. His dad helps him by saying, “Sam, what you feel matters, but it doesn’t have to control you. Giving each feeling a name helps you know what to do with it.” He then tells him “a feeling is just a feeling. It’s not in charge of you. If you feel afraid, take a deep breath, name your feeling, and ask God to help you with it.” Sam then goes to school where he sees other kids dealing with feelings. He helps them and they all end up working on their feelings and not letting them control them. In the end, Sam tells his parents about his day and how he asked God to help him.

It is recommended for ages four through eight, but it has a message older children and even adults could learn from too. It is a scientifically and biblically based message. I highly recommend this book.

BOOK REVIEW – Easter is Coming! By Tama Fortner

This bright and colorful children’s’ book proclaims that Easter is coming on almost every page. It is a great book for kids because it explains not only what Easter is, but why Easter is important. It starts with Adam and Eve’s sin and goes through Christ’s death and resurrection.

Although it was too wordy for my almost 3-year-old granddaughter, an older child would enjoy hearing the story and probably understand it better. I recommend this book for children around age five. This delightful book will build excitement and understanding that “Easter is Coming!”

BOOK REVIEW – The Silent Noisy Night by Jill Roman Lord

This beautifully illustrated and written children’s book by Jill Roman Lord and illustrated by Kelly Breemer brings up an interesting question. Was it a very noisy night with animals making noise, people shouting and singing, etc., when Christ was born? Probably so. We know the shepherds returned “glorifying and praising God.” It makes the point that we need to make a joyful noise in praise that our Savior is born after going through all the noises that may have been heard that night.

This is a fun padded board book that I look forward to reading it to my grandchildren when they come for Christmas. It may have been a noisy night, but let’s not be afraid to make noise now in praise to our Savior born that night!

BOOK REVIEW – Who’s Your Daddy? By Lisa and Missy Harper

This is a great children’s book especially for children of divorce or death. Those of us who know Lisa Harper as a great Bible teacher, know she adopted Missy from Haiti and is raising her as a single mom. This book goes into questions Missy asked about who her father was after a boy asked her at school. She finds out she has an awesome Daddy who will never leave her or forsake her.

This book is beautifully illustrated and talks about our “skin Daddies” and God the Father. Some kids have two Daddies and some, like Missy, only one. It answers questions like, “If God is my Daddy, how come He doesn’t drive me to school or teach me to play soccer or make me pancakes like George’s daddy?” and, If kids “already have a skin daddy, why do they need God to be their Daddy?”

If you know someone who doesn’t have a “skin daddy” this would be a great book to give them.

BOOK REVIEW – Who Sang the First Song? By Ellie Holcomb

This beautifully illustrated children’s book is written by a songwriter. She reveals how God created us all with a song to sing and He sang the first song, but first, it goes through a lyrical poem of asking if it was animals or creation who sang first. Children will enjoy this book and it encourages them to sing the song God has put in their hearts.

It is a really cute book and I will enjoy sharing it with my grandchildren. Yes, let’s all join in making a joyful noise with the song God has given us!
